    Description

This necklace was made by the Santo Domingo (Tewa) Pueblo Native American Indians in the early part of the 1900s. Some call these Depression Era, but they were made well into the middle of the last century. Still a vintage antique!
When I came across this necklace, seven of the ten battery casing tabs were blank, and I have restored them with chips of turquoise. I now have a greater appreciation for how these pieces of American Folk Art were created.
The Thunderbird focal is original with red plastic fork tines as wing trim and white carved of unknown material spaced with black around the head. The turquoise body and three tabs (two center tabs and top right) are all original stones.
It is strung on the original thread of small glass beads, which received a gentle cleaning
    .
The necklace is 24 inches of beads and tabs and slides over the head (no clasp). The down wing thunderbird is1.5 inches tall and 1 inch wide. There might have been a tail at one time, but it is difficult to tell from the way the area between the wings is finished (rather smooth for a broken piece.)
Please review the photos, as they are part of the description. If you have any questions, please contact me. I have been working with jewelry for over 20 years and have restored many necklaces, but this was my first time crushing turquoise and experimenting with mosaic. Restored in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, just down US 550 from the Santo Domingo Pueblo.
Will be shipped First Class with Insurance in a box to protect this treasure of American history.
