    Description

Being offered is a truly old, antique, Santo Domingo Indian jewelry pendant and necklace.  This is an early classic design piece made by the Santo Domingo Indians during the early 1900's or turn of the century.  During this time, Natives used all kinds of available material to craft their jewelry for the early tourist trade.  They would melt US silver coins, utilize local gemstones, and trade for other types of beads and materials.  In this case, the black backing material on this necklace was the car battery housing or casing.  This was a hard plastic material, believe it might have been catalin, and was cut to fit from the casing.  The other items used were turquoise and coral chips.  The white portions were either mother of pearl or a hard white plastic material, which is the case here on this necklace.  The beads used are made of a stone material, probably traded, and looks like jasper.  The necklace does show age and wearing.  At some point the Thunderbirds tail had broken off and was re-glued.  This is more visible from the back side.  As part of this, one of the rod accents on the tail is missing from the far left side shown in the pic.  This can be restored by finding a similar color and design object or replace them with other similar design items.  These actually look like they were skewers used in drink olives, usually looking like swords.  Aside from this the necklace is all intact.  Despite the issues, this is truly a rare necklace and pendant that is seldom found in this condition and size.  The pendant is approx. 2 1/2" including the bale by 2 3/16",  The accents are approx. 1 1/16" by 7/16".  The necklace is approx. 24" long.  Insurance is included in the SH price.
