Description
Welcome!WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT IT: a rare, gorgeous, entirely hand constructed and hand stamped ring by Ike (Austin) Wilson who was one of the all-time great Navajo silversmiths. It is properly stamped with his well documented hallmark of an extended bow and arrow. I have a pair of earrings by him offered separately in the store which would be great with this ring and is of the same period. The stamp work on this ring is deep and clean and complex and perfection. I love to wear all silver rings; they go with everything and can easily become a signature piece.
BACKGROUND: Wilson, Navajo, became very famous, worked for CG Wallace, was represented in the Sotheby's auction catalog and was always renowned, prize winning, and his work very highly valued. He lived from 1901 to 1942 and began to win prizes in inter tribal Gallup by the 1930s. He was also featured as a very successful silversmith in Adair's book "The Navajo and Pueblo Silvermiths." He was referred to as Ike Wilson but there was confusion in great part due to Barton Wright's books which referred to his hallmark as Austin Wilson's. This mistake was perpetuated by all the books; sloppy research to copy from previous authors without double checking. Now, one of the authors has updated and corrected. The artist who was known as Austin Wilson and used the extended bow and arrow hallmark, was a great artist. His actual name was Ike Wilson, not Austin Wilson. I have some of his boxes, a spoon, and the clip earrings in my store right now, all wonderful examples of his work, as is this wonderful ring.
CONDITION: excellent, wearable, collectible
MEASUREMENTS:
• ring size 5.5 on Mandrel, maybe a
little extra room there; so it seems to fit like a 6
• diameter 3/4"
• height 1/4"
• weight 5.28grams
SUMMARY: This ring is a fabulous example of Wilson's gorgeous work; it's just beautiful, all hand constructed, stamped and properly signed. It's mesmerizingly beautiful.

Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target. All the books have errors, so in addition to counterchecking, I have developed some expertise over the years and I do care about getting it right, so as more information comes to light I update my listings and also get in touch with my previous buyers, to inform them of any changes in attributions. I am sincerely committed to ongoing accuracy.
