Old Native American Zuni turquoise fish scale inlay sterling silver belt buckle, unmarked but attributed to either Lola Hechilay, Joe, her husband, or both. Zuni silversmiths Lola and Joe became well-known for their use of  fish scale inlay work. Their favorite stone appear to have been turquoise, but some of their pieces were also inlaid with jet and mother of pearl. When working together, they used to sign their pieces "JLH", although some of their pieces weren't signed at all. If our information is correct, Lola was born in 1934 and passed away in 2010 in McKinley County, New Mexico, at the age of 76. Joe was born in 1928, and we don't have any info related to his death. They seem to have remained active until the 1990s, although less prolific. Their work appeared on Bassman's 1992 book "Zuni Jewelry", on page 19.
In this piece, the artist(s) opted for a flush mount turquoise-only fish scale channel inlay mosaic, with rustic silver channels. This piece weighs approximately 50.7 grams, and measures 2 3/4" in width (across) by almost 1 13/16" in height. The rigid keeper measures 1 3/8" on the inside, basicly the size of your standard 1 1/2" belt. Dark patina on this old beauty.
Thank you for supporting authentic Native American art.
