"Suddenly passing Taos Mountain, I felt I was part of the earth, so that I felt the sun on my surface and the rain. I felt the stars and the growth of the moon; under me rivers ran. And against me were the tides. The waters of rain sank into me...and I knew there was no reason to be lonely that one was everything and Death was as easy as the rising sun and as calm and natural -- that to be enfolded in Earth was not an end but a part of oneself, part of every day and night that we lived so that Being part of Earth one was never alone. And all the fear went out of me -- with a great good stillness and strength." Taken from a letter from Millicent Rogers to her son.
If not familiar, you may want to research the fascinating, iconic and sometimes sad life of Millicent Rogers, heir to Standard Oil. She died tragically at the age of 51 in 1953 in Taos, New Mexico where she had lived since 1947. She was a fashion icon and passionate collector of Native American art across all media, much of which she commissioned for local Native American artists. After moving to Taos and falling in love with Native American art, she dedicated the rest of her life to collecting and promoting them. By the time of her death she had a collection consisting of hundreds of works of art and artifacts. A creative force in her own right, she was also an early champion and activist for Native American civil rights and is credited with securing Blue Lake for the Taos Pueblo. She successfully lobbied for Native American art to be classified as historic and protected.
