Description
This beautiful sterling silver/overlay bolo was hand-crafted by renowned Santo Domingo artist, Joseph Coriz in 1994 and has been in our vault, never worn. It is approximately 1 7/8" x 1 1/2" and weighs approximately 53.5 grams including the leather cord and sterling tips. It is very approximately 41" long. The meticulous silver overlay depicts a turtle, representing healing, wisdom, spirituality, health, safety, longevity, protection and fertility. Inside the shell of the turtle are a pueblo village are apueblo village with a corn stalk and corn cob, the staff of life and sustenance. There are 4 trademark 14K gold dots -- the sun, the eyes of the turtle and above the pueblo. Above the turtle are the sun and opposite it, a rain cloud with thunder. Joseph was born in 1956 on the Santo Domingo reservation and learned the art of jewelry making from his parents at a very early age. His work incorporates cultural tradition and symbolism with a contemporary flare. His creations are easily identifiable and are remarkable in their beauty, creativity, design and workmanship His work is highly collectible. He is a former school teacher and draftsman and is now a foremost and very recognized artist of our time.
