Description
Welcome!WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT IT: Mark Chee, one of the best and one of my most favorite Navajo artists, made this superb pin pendant enhancer with natural Fox mine turquoise and minimalistic silver work. The stone is exceptional.
He always picked the best stones.
This one is a swirly blue with faint white swirls in it that makes it look like clouds. There is a translucency so that the brown matrix which is well under the surface, appears to be on the surface and even looks like a crack which isn't there at all. The surface is completely smooth to the touch! So there are wonderful qualities to the beautiful stone. The silver work consists of a plain bezel which is framed and the frame includes chisel work on the bottom side and four applied raindrops on each of two other sides. Very simple silver work,
making
the stone the star attraction. I have a hair ornament that he made available separately
I
my sore. Look around.
BACKGROUND:
This is an elegant and deceptively simple presentation by the great Mark Chee who w
as one of the all time great Navajo artists, and has been recognized by winning many awards, having been represented in the best of galleries and also being in the best museums. He is historically one of the most important and collectible great Navajo artists. Mark Chee lived from 1914 till 1981. I bought some of his work during a trip in the early 1970s and have always loved his work. I remember when I bought his earrings then I was told he was a famous silversmith but at that time I didn't care about his fame: just about the quality of the work, which was wonderful. He loved top quality turquoise. What a gorgeous man he was, too, and his work is always special.
CONDITION: excellent vintage, wearable and collectible.
MEASUREMENTS:
• 2" long x 1-1/4" wide
• stone measures 1-3/4" x 1-1/8
• weight 22.21gram
• unmarked for metal content but it's guaranteed to be sterling silver .925
• signed by Mark Chee, the great Navajo silversmith
SUMMARY:
There's an elegant simplicity but a depth of great beauty. It is tactile because of th glasslike smooth surface which I love to hold in my hand. It's versatile. As an enhancer with an open bail, it can be added to
almost
all necklaces that weren't graduated. For example, Navajo pearls, silver beads, turquoise or heishi necklaces would work well with it. So it's a pendant but with the open bail it can be worn with almost anything and of course, it's also a pin. It will be an asset to any collection. I believe his work as one of the most collectible master silversmiths in history has increased in value over the years.
