Description
From a Tucson estate some years ago and likely remembrance of some sojourn in the vicinity of Gallup (or the trading post of C.G. Wallace at Zuni) is this superb I believe circa 1940's or so Frank Vacit Zuni channel inlay silver ranger buckle and matching tip, construction features fully indicative of an upper tier tribal making in those times. The duo features attractive inlays of greenish blue turquoise and mother-of-pearl adding to the visual charisma and that distinctly vintage look - the specific Zuni Pueblo crafting is pretty obvious, though here reinforced by the clear and deeply struck "ear of corn" fleur de lis mark specific to Frank. Frank Vacit (1915-1919) was one of the most well respected Zuni silver artisans of his time, working from about 1932 through the 1950's. His skill with inlay is well referenced and rightly so as evidenced here. Frank's mark aside, the offered buckle and tip are clearly the product of a skilled tribal artisan working by traditional means in fulfilling the requirements of an appreciative well heeled visitor audience - this was not cheap even in its time. Weight is good for the form at about 42.6 total grams on my portable digital scale - that's 36.9 grams for the buckle and 5.7 grams for the tip. Condition of the buckle is quite fine with a nice aura of time to the silver and inlay surfaces; the original silver tongue is present and still ready for duty. Usual and expected signs of period service here simply support a genuine history. The tip has suffered just a bit more abuse from period service as typical - some of the inlays show a modicum of surface checking and tight fracture lines, a normal unobtrusive consequence of purposeful use. A look at those pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Size of the buckle is about 2 3/16 in. long (horizontal) and 1 29/32 in. at the widest. It was likely made to accommodate about a 3/4 in. wide belt or billet. The tip is about 15/16 in. long and 11/16 in. wide. If you prefer the better sort of earlier 20th century Navajo and Pueblo wearable artworks, or simply wish a single improvement to the ambiance of each day, this will have great meaning for you.::
