    Description

    Welcome!
WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT IT: This is a rare and fabulous early masterpiece snake dancer bolo with superb mosaic inlay and many finely carved stones, the best I've ever seen, made by Leo Poblano at his best. There is nothing better than this piece. I've seen some collectors showing off their collections of snake dancers and none in their whole collections are as fine as this one. This is just the absolute best. One book published 7 years ago depicts similar pieces by him and values these snake dancers by him at up to 00! This one is better than all of those, and I believe the value is the highest for it; I'm offering it more reasonably but it is indeed far more valuable and there is nothing as terrific as this exact one. The mosaic inlay is very fine and the use of carving the very best. There are all natural stones, very finely cut and set, etched, filed and carved. They include turquoise, abalone, red abalone, jet and mother of pearl. The details of most of the carvings are so fine that they are hard to appreciate without magnification. The work is astonishing. Note the blue eyes under the mask and the inlaid markings on the snake. The tips and tie are original to this bolo; the tips are spectacular with huge handmade round beads, and the tie is still flexible. The piece dates from the1940s to early 1950s, probably the earliest. It's not popular to say it's 1930s because some books are incorrect about when this work began, but I think this one could date earlier than the 1940s.
BACKGROUND: Leo Poblano was considered one of the greatest Zuni artists in history, and he was well represented in the CG Wallace catalog and Sotheby auction. He served in WWII and then joined the famous firefighters when he got back where he suffered an early tragic death. He lived from 1905 to 1959. His work is represented in the best museums was carried by the best galleries and his work is depicted in most all the books. There's nothing better than this masterpiece bolo.
    CONDITION:
    excellent
    vintage, wearable and collectible.
    MEASUREMENTS:
    • bolo dimensions: 3-1/2" H x 2" W
    • tips dimensions: 2-3/4" H x 1/2" W
    • length of tie with tips end to end: 39"
    • weight of entire piece: 37.88grams
    • weight with the tie and tips off the scale; 28grams, very approximate.
    • unsigned which is usual for those times, but strongly attributed to Leo Poblano, Zuni. This style piece of his is depicted in several books.
    • metal content was not indicated in those days but it's sterling silver .925 or coin at .900
SUMMARY: This masterpiece is museum worthy and suitable for the best collections. A great work of art of compelling beauty in a perfectly executed mosaic inlay bolo with numerous carefully and precisely carved natural stones. The stones are exquisite, the silver work and inlay are beautiful and the condition is fabulous, too. This is as good as it gets; it's the most wonderful elegant work of art.
